Clothing From Kathmandu

Kathmandu being a vibrant city and so are the clothes from. It besides being the largest city in Nepal and an expanding metropolis, it would be fair to say that it also manufactures some of finest hippie clothes from this part of the hemisphere.
Most of the clothes manufacture in Kathmandu is exported by different means to other part of the world as hippie and ethnic clothes. And, most of what is worn on in the city is imported from other countries such as China and India.
Most of the clothes that are manufactured for export are actually cottage industries rather than any large scale industry and vast quantities of men and women are involved in the process. This is because, most of the manufacturing process is done by hand more than any machines.
Further more, most of the raw materials are from Nepal itself. It starts from scratch where it is refined at home and sold to traders in the market generating revenue for the village folks. later this is taken to the city where it is turned into material of different kinds, most of the times by hand and later dyed to various colours.
Since the most sought after colouring by those who buy these clothes abroad look for a certain kind of colouring, it is either tie dyed or stonewashed. At times you will get batik prints as well or the ones known as block print.
Then the fabric is cut into set pieces and stitched into different clothes which can be only termed as Kathmandu Clothing a brand in itself. Another astonishing fact about them is that some of the clothes are embroidered with different floral, birds, trees and natural scenic work. There are exposed stitches and patched work so sought after in the west.
It is believed that over 95% of these clothes are sent abroad for consumption there. Only the remaining amount may be worn by the locals in Kathmandu.
